Your're right, the spark on the scavenging stroke (called the "waste spark") doesn't do a thing. But the crank sensor gives a TDC indication to the computer on EVERY revolution of the crankshaft. Rather than figure out whether a particular revolution is an exhaust or compression stroke, the computer usually just calculates the advance and fires the spark on every revolution. To determine whether this particular revolution is exhaust or compression, requires an additional sensor in the valve train and an additional input to the computer (which the Savage doesn't have).

So, I assume, the Savage uses a waste spark. To make a long story short, it's just cheaper to "waste a spark" than to install the additional logic and hardware to "save a spark". It's strange but true.

If the Savage is different - someone please enlighten us. Pat
